Back-to-School Essentials

When preparing for back to school for a child with special needs, sometimes you need to look beyond the school supply list for items that will set your child up for success. Success can look like increased independence in classroom activities, improved self-confidence or enhanced learning of new skills. As a parent of a child with special needs, I’m sharing a few items that have helped set our child up for success by promoting independence and inspiring confidence.

We love these adaptive scissors! For children with decreased hand strength or poor fine motor skills, these scissors are perfect for learning to cut.

Pencil grips like these are great for promoting proper pencil grip.

This is another great option for a pencil grip.

Triangular crayons are a great option to promote independence in coloring activities. I love the fact that they do not roll off the table or desk, and the size of these crayons makes them easy to hold.

A plastic water bottle is on many school supply lists. This one has been a great option for our family. I love that my child can open and close it independently and it does not leak.

This is one of my personal favorites as an item that can increase independence and self-confidence. Attaching these zipper pulls to backpacks, lunchboxes and coats can make the zipper easier to grip and allow children to zip their items independently.

These uniform skirts are great for school. There are no buttons or zippers to contend with. The pull-on style promotes independence in dressing and toileting. The built in shorts make them a great option for the playground as well.

Sometimes children need extra reinforcement of skills at home. These sight word flash cards are broken down by grade level and are great for practicing at home.

These math flash cards are great for reinforcing math facts and are broken down into addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

I have this dry erase board, and we use it for practicing handwriting, spelling words, and math problems. I love that this dry erase board is lined
